Dr. Robert Gelfand

Dr. Robert Gelfand

Cancer does not go away at five o’clock or on the weekends—neither do I. My patients can reach me at any time, including nights and weekends. I provide the personal approach that is not available in clinic settings, by hospital-based oncologists. In my office, I focus not only on providing the highest quality in patient care, but I also want to ensure the highest level of comfort. For example we provide WiFi, a coffee bar and stocked refrigerator for your refreshment. I believe that comfort during therapy makes a significant difference in your overall experience.

My profession, which is my passion, offers me the ability to attend to my patients from the vantage point of being a university based teaching physician, but with a philosophy that stresses the importance of personal connection and comfort.

Dr. Gelfand is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He received his MD with honors from the State University of New York Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn. He trained in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and completed his fellowship in hematology, bone marrow transplantation and oncology at Cornell University Medical Center in 1996. He is board certified in hematology and oncology.

Dr. Gelfand teaches at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell College of Medicine and lectures around the country in such topics as breast cancer, cancers of the gastrointestinal system and lung cancer. He also lectures on supportive care of patients with cancer, including the management of nausea and vomiting and bone metastases. He is the co-author of Just Get Me Through This, a guide for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dr. Gelfand acted as the lung cancer moderator at the Lazard Capital Partners yearly healthcare convention in 2009. He was featured on 29 stations in October of 2011 for Colon Cancer Awareness Month where he was asked to educate the public on the epidemiology and prevention of colon cancer. In addition to numerous other professional distinctions, he is listed as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle and Connolly since 2015.

Dr. Gelfand  founded Hudson Hematology Oncology (HHO) in New Jersey. Located on the waterfront in Jersey City, HHO is the largest hematology/oncology practice in Hudson County. HHO allows Dr. Gelfand to dedicate a part of his time to taking care of patients located in New Jersey. The HHO team includes three full time oncologists who work under Dr. Gelfand and ensure the continuity of excellent care.

Dr. Gelfand has been involved, through charities and private organizations, with the management of patients all over the world.  His concentration, of course, is on the management of his patients in his own private office, now newer, larger and more accommodating to make sure that the care given remains the best available in New York.
